Stress can impact your overall health and wellbeing in many ways. Both your mental and physical health is affected by high levels of stress. Prolonged chronic stress can increase your risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety (APA, 2022). This explains why managing stress is so important for increasing your quality of life. There are different ways to address and reduce stress that you can do on your own or with support.
- Exercise is a great way to reduce disease risk and is also a stress reliever. Any kind of exercise can reduce stress, so you can choose exercises you enjoy doing (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
- Joining a social club or class, attending social events, and volunteering can help promote a sense of community. Social clubs encourage socialization and decrease feelings of loneliness.
- Self-care can help with managing stress and promote good overall health and well-being. Participating in activities that you enjoy and find relaxing can aid in effectively managing stress.
- Spending time outside in nature with exposure to natural light and fresh air can reduce stress.
- Counseling or therapy can allow you to discuss your stressors with a professional. Mental health professionals can provide insight into coping strategies (Mayo Clinic, 2021).
Incorporating one or more of these stress reducing strategies into your daily routine can significantly improve your stress, mental, and physical well-being. Why not start today? You could go for a short walk outdoors, read a book you’ve been wanting to read, catch up with your friends and family, or attend a local event. Take control of your stress, don’t let it control you.
